Über den Stand der paläomagnetischen Untersuchungen im Pliozän und Pleistozän der Bundesrepublik Deutschland

Karl Brunnacker and Wolfgang Boenigk

Abstract. It was possible to locate the MATUYAMA/BRUNHES-boundary in the clay-pit of Kärlich (middle Rhine). This change of magnetic polarity can be found in sediments of the "Ville-Interglacial-Komplex" which are covered by deposits of at least six glaciations. In all the other examined german sites the lacks in the sequences are too great in order to pinpoint the position of the MATUYAMA/BRUNHES-boundary. The correlation of the oldest pleistocene sediments with the MATUYAMA-epoch and its events could only be done on a trial basis, as the sediments are generally too coarse for magnetic measurements and pollenanalytic investigations. On the other hand the stratigraphic sequence of the studied beds is well established by the huge coal pits in the Ville area. It is possible to place the Tertiary/Quaternary-boundary on geobotanical basis with about 2 Mio. years BP because the change oif polarity from the Gauss- to the MATUYAMA-epoch (about 2,4 Mio. years BP) was formed in the highest Reuverium (C). The GAUSS-epoch is to connect with the middle till higher Pliocene (Brunssumium and middle Reuverium).
